Does anyone agree that tipping pizza delivery "for doing a good job" rationale is utter crap?

I accept tipping waiters in restaurants, because that has always customarily formed part of their wages.





But this business about tipping pizza delivery people, your priest for performing a marriage, etc.? WHAT CRAP!





Why should I tip a pizza delivery guy? If he doesn't deliver the pizza to me, then his company doesn't make money on the transaction. It's an essential function of the transaction, so why should I tip him?





Sure, he can deliver it last or mess up the pizza, but if he does then I don't order from that establishment again.





What's next, do we have to start tipping the guy at the burger joint register for delivering our food to us?





It's utter crap, this having to grease everybody's palm because they "did a good job". It's their JOBS, people. It's what they're SUPPOSED TO DO ANYWAY.

I have recently stopped tipping food delivery people because they have started charging a delivery fee and that money goes to the driver. This includes both Pizza Hut, Dominoes, and Papa John's. Now this does not include the small mom and pop places, because most of them don't charge.
Reply:Another reason that I have stopped tipping as well is because when they show up to the door and you hand them an even amount of dollars they never have any change. Because of this I have started giving them the exact amount if at all possible. Report Abuse

Reply:You tip a delivery person because you are paying for the wear and tear on that person's vehicle. The fact of the matter is that delivery drivers rack up mileage very fast which equates to more oil changes, tire changes, and other general maintainance issues that arise from heavy vehicle useage. Dude is delivering Pizza in your hood Dude! In a beat up Yugo with 2 dollars worth of gas..trying hard to get up enough money to buy his own 5 dollar pizza...You cheapskate son of a gun..what hole did you crawl out from under...these folks could be giving up on life and strapping on a bomb to fry your handsome butt .you know what? they is trying their very best to make it in a world that you my friend take for granted. Reply:wow you tend to go on you must feel strongly about this. the reason we tip drivers,hairdressers,etc. is to cover their costs the outstanding hairdresser still gets paid that of the salon rate and the tip is the thank you for their carrying costs,booth rental, supplies. as for a pizza guy they have a lot of wear on their car and get paid so little it is expected because they do a hard job of zipping around town and hitting pot holes they don't see and getting yelled at by customers who waited long time etc. just suck it up man it is the cost of being nice if you don't want to tip them then get your butt in your own car and drive the 5 minutes to pick it up like I do.
Reply:I tip him because I am too lazy to go get it. Customs are not always based on good reasoning. Its just customarily expected that you tip him
Reply:By that rationale, you shouldn't tip waiters either, because the restaurant doesn't make money if the waiter doesn't bring you your food. (And most restaurants' insurance policies will not let you go to the kitchen and get it yourself.)


It is just part of our society that some people get tipped for doing their jobs. They are also paid a smaller hourly wage and are taxed on their tips, thus forcing them to rely on them. (It is legal for to pay people less than minimum wage if they have a job that earns tips.) I see tipping people as paying them the money that it is assumed that they were paid anyway, and it's just good manners.


You don't have to agree with it, and you don't have to tip. But one of the great things about this country is you don't have to engage in acts of civility and politeness if you don't want to, so you don't have to cover your mouth when you sneeze near other people, or say "Excuse me" when you bump into them, either.
Reply:Well, tipping a priest for preforming a marriage is definitely The right thing to do as they do not make TONS of money and they are doing a service for you.





Tipping pizza drivers is also the right thing to do as they do count on this money to pay their bills, etc. Everyone has to make a living and if you have ever worked in the service industry, which I assume you have not, you would understand!
Reply:I tip cause the poor driver had to risk his/her life on the highway to get to my house. And it is also a nice jesture. Helping someone out by giving them a few dollars.
Reply:Well, if it bothers you THAT badly, then don't tip or just go pick it up yourself. Why cry about it? I always tip well, whether it is the delivery person or a waiter/waitress. It is all a matter of opinion.. what you think they deserve. Considering you have worked in the business, you should be a little more sympathetic. I think you just need a reality check... but like I said, if you don't want to do it, then don't do it. There is no gun to your head for god sake!
Reply:I love this question. Yes, you should tip, always, service workers. Since in some states, service workers are paid less than minimum wage because it's assumed tips will make up the difference. And the IRS will tax them on their earnings, whether you tip them or not. When your pastor marries you, he is doing extra work. He's not getting rich with his Sunday sermon, counseling church members, visiting them in the hospital. When he takes the extra time to accomodate your request, taking even more time away from his own family, you don't think he deserves an honorarium. It's not required, but it's certainly earned. It's all about respect . I'm not sure that's something you could ever understand.
Reply:Pizza delivery guys don't make that much per hour, if they use their own car they have wear and tear on their car. The price of gas is high, and again if they use their own car they do not get reimbursed for gas. It is also a dangerous job especially if they deliver in a larger metropolitan area. Last year, there were three pizza delivery guys who 2 were shot and killed and one stabbed and killed as well as robbed. It was so premeditated, the drivers, never had a chance since the killers ordered pizza's and just waited to kill them. A guy I work with also works at night delivering pizza's, he's trying to supplement his income so his family can pay their bills and keep a roof over their heads. I wouldn't deliver pizza's, a waitress makes more and is safe!

Don't consider it a tip! Change your perspective on the idea, consider the additional $1 or $2 extra, as a lazy tax, for you could have driven in your car, and got the pizza yourself, but you had this person bring it to you, so for not spending your own fuel and not adding wear and tear on your car, you pay extra...

Reply:I'd have to disagree. They get such a low wage as it is and that extra expense for fuel and the time it takes driving warrants a tip. For me, it's all about common courtesy.





Yes, it's already their job to begin with. But do you realize that it can't be easy driving from place to place, figuring out streets, navigating traffic, etc? They ARE doing a good job when despite every other person they deliver to, they are STILL doing their best to deliver a quality, hot pizza to your doorstep in a reasonable amount of time.





Get a job where much of your income depends on tips. Then tell me people don't deserve it. You apparently are incredibly ungrateful and rude.

Reply:The price I pay includes the cost of materials, a cut of the pizza boys wages, transportation costs etc. So why tip?





The pizza probably only cost $2 in ingrediants anyway, just think how much you're bing ripped off.
